Buddy Walks

Our Buddy Walking is a 1-1 support service which helps people who may be struggling with getting outdoors on their own and struggling to connect with others.

Sometimes, people don’t feel ready or able to join a walking group. We can match you with a Volunteer Buddy Walker who can take you on short walks to help you to get back to walking or walk more.

Buddy Walking allows people to walk with supportive and non-judgmental volunteers, in locations all over East Lothian. If you are looking to improve your fitness in a gentle, non-invasive manner, and connect with others, buddy walking might be for you.

Is Buddy Walking suitable for you?

If you live in East Lothian and are looking to improve your connection with the community as well as gently work on walking, buddy walking may be suitable for you. Walking and spending time outdoors can be beneficial for your mental health, and having a companion with you makes this walk all the more enjoyable.

Buddy Walking works by connecting people with warm and empathic volunteers to encourage outdoor activity and increase connection with the community.

How long does it last?

Buddy Walks last for up to 1 hour per week. These walks can take place in locations local to you, or destinations you want to visit, so long as they are in East Lothian. The entire duration of the walks lasts for 10 weeks.

Please note there is a waiting list to be matched with a buddy walker.

Want to volunteer as a Buddy Walker?

Are you a non-judgmental and empathetic person? Do you enjoy spending time outdoors and talking to new people? If the answer is ‘yes’ for both, buddy walk volunteering might be for you.
