Volunteer FAQs

Whether it’s your first time volunteering, or you have volunteered for years, questions may arise regarding what’s expected of you and what volunteering looks like. Below we have collated the most frequently asked questions regarding volunteering at Changes East Lothian.

If for any reason you require further support or have questions about volunteering, please email info@ChangesEastlothian.org.

Why should I volunteer?

Volunteering is a rewarding and supportive way of giving back to the community! You get the opportunity to learn new skills, apply existing skills and knowledge to your role, and get to know many people within the community. Taking the time out of your week to connect with others for the purpose of helping and supporting those who may be struggling is so important, and we are grateful to you for considering volunteering. We have a wide range of roles to suit varying interests, which you can read more about here.

Am I suitable for volunteering?

If you are empathetic, non-judgmental and want to give back to the community, then we are eager to hear from you! You do not need to know everything about mental health to volunteer – we welcome people from all levels of experience and encourage those who may need extra support to attend our training. Working one-to-one can be a little more demanding, so we do offer further training if it is your first time volunteering. If you’d like to speak to our recruitment officer before applying, then please email info@ChangesEastLothian.org.

What is the time commitment for volunteering?

Our volunteer roles vary with time commitment. 1-1 roles are approximately 1 hour per week, and group roles vary from 2-3 hours per group/workshop. For specific time commitments for specific volunteer roles, check out this page.

What support will I receive while volunteering?

As a Changes volunteer you will receive ongoing support and supervision from your project coordinator, and the option to attend socials and group events for volunteers. We want to ensure volunteers always feel heard, held and supported while working with us. Find out more about our support here.

Can I receive support at the same time as volunteering?

We believe that giving is just as important as receiving. So the short answer is yes, you can receive support while volunteering, and in fact it is encouraged! With the plethora of wellbeing support and activities we have to offer at Changes, there is something for everyone. While volunteering you can speak to your project coordinator, or read about Changes support services here.

Do I need training?

Most of our volunteer roles do require some level of training, and a PVG (we cover this cost). These will usually be conducted by the project coordinator or a training facilitator. You can read more about role specific training here.

I am unsure about which role to apply for.

If you aren’t sure about which volunteer role will suit you best, that’s okay. Feel free to email us at info@ChangesEastLothian.org to speak with our recruitment officer and they can answer any questions you may have, and offer helpful advice.

How long is the application process?

Once you have submitted your application, you will hear back from our recruitment officer who will arrange an interview. After this you will speak with the project coordinator. You will then have your PVG and references taken. Finally you will have your induction and role specific training, and then you will be ready to volunteer!

Can I volunteer for more than one role?

Yes, you can volunteer for multiple roles at Changes East Lothian. If it is your first time volunteering, we may make helpful suggestions as to where to begin volunteering, and then increase your hours. You can read more about our volunteers and the roles they support here.
